Sliding door wardrobes are popular in UK bedrooms because the doors do not swing out into the room. To make sure a freestanding sliding wardrobe fits, take these measurements before you order.
What you need
A metal tape measure, a pencil and paper. Measure in centimetres, because wardrobe sizes are listed in cm.
Step 1: Measure the width of the wall
Measure the wall where the wardrobe will stand at three heights: near the floor, at waist height and near the ceiling. Walls are not always straight, so use the smallest figure. Leave a small gap at each side rather than choosing a wardrobe that matches the wall exactly.
Step 2: Measure the height
Measure from the floor to the ceiling, again at both ends of the wall, and use the smaller number. Check for anything that hangs lower than the ceiling, such as a light fitting, a curtain pole or a sloping ceiling.
Step 3: Measure the depth available
Measure from the wall out into the room to the point where you need to keep a walkway clear. Remember that sliding doors do not need opening space, but you still need room to stand in front of the wardrobe.
Step 4: Check the skirting board and sockets
Skirting boards push a wardrobe slightly away from the wall. Note their depth. Also note any plug sockets, radiators or switches on the wall that the wardrobe could cover.
Step 5: Check the route into the room
Freestanding wardrobes are usually delivered flat packed, but measure doorways, stair turns and landings anyway, especially for larger pieces.
Compare your measurements with the product
Each wardrobe page lists its width, height and depth. Our sliding wardrobes range from compact 100cm and 120cm models to 255cm 3 door wardrobes. Browse mirrored sliding wardrobes, white sliding wardrobes or all wardrobes.
Tip: mirrors in small rooms
Mirrored sliding doors reflect light and can make a small bedroom feel larger, and they save you finding wall space for a full length mirror.
