UK bed sizes are different from European and American sizes, so it is worth checking the measurements before you buy a bed frame or a mattress. Here are the standard UK mattress sizes, what they are usually called, and which rooms they suit.

These are mattress sizes. A bed frame is always a little larger than its mattress, and upholstered, wingback and sleigh beds can be noticeably wider and longer because of the headboard and side rails. Always check the external dimensions listed on the product page before you order.
Single beds
A single is the usual choice for children, teenagers and guest rooms. It fits in most box rooms and leaves space for a desk or wardrobe. If floor space is tight, look at bunk beds or a mid sleeper, which put storage or a second sleeper in the same footprint.
Small double and double beds
A small double (4ft) works well for one adult who wants more room than a single, or for a compact spare room. A standard double (4ft 6in) is a common choice for couples and suits most average bedrooms. Many of our divan beds come in both.
King and super king beds
A king is 15cm wider and 10cm longer than a double, which makes a real difference for two people. A super king is a full 6ft wide and needs a larger room. As a rough guide, leave at least 60cm of walking space on each side of the bed and at the foot. Browse our super king beds if you have the space.
How to choose the right size
- Measure the room, including where doors and wardrobes open.
- Allow for the frame, not just the mattress. Check the product dimensions.
- Think about storage. An ottoman bed or a divan with drawers can replace a chest of drawers in a small room.
- Buy the mattress in the same UK size as the bed. European mattress sizes will not fit a UK frame properly.
