Triple Bunk Beds: Buying Guide, Safety and Ceiling Height

Grey triple wooden bunk bed

A triple bunk bed sleeps three children in roughly the floor space of one bed, which makes it a popular choice for shared bedrooms, sleepovers and holiday homes. Because it is taller and holds more people than a standard bunk, there are a few extra things to check before you buy. This guide covers ceiling height, age guidance, materials and mattresses.

What is a triple bunk bed?

A triple bunk bed is a bunk bed that sleeps three people. The most common design in the UK is a single top bunk above a lower level, with a third bed either stacked as a third tier or set lower down. Check the product images and dimensions to see which layout a model uses.

How high does my ceiling need to be?

Measure from floor to ceiling and compare it with the total height of the bed listed on the product page. The child on the top bunk needs enough space to sit up without hitting their head, so leave a generous gap above the top mattress. Remember to check for light fittings, sloping loft ceilings and window positions too.

What age is a top bunk suitable for?

UK safety guidance for bunk beds advises that the upper bunk is not suitable for children under 6 years old. Younger children should sleep on the lowest level. Always follow the age guidance and weight limits supplied with your bed.

Wooden or metal triple bunk bed?

Wooden Metal
Look Warm, traditional, often painted white or grey Slim, modern, often silver or black
Feel Solid and chunky Lighter and more open
Good for Family bedrooms, children's rooms Smaller rooms, guest rooms, holiday lets

In our range, the Triple Wooden Bunk Bed with Mattresses comes in grey or white, and the Triple Metal Bunk Bed with Mattress and Triple Metal Bunk Bed are silver.

What mattress fits a triple bunk bed?

Bunk beds need mattresses of the correct size and depth so the safety rails stay effective. A mattress that is too thick reduces the height of the guard rail above it. Use the mattress depth recommended for your bed, and buy it with the bed where possible so you know it fits.

Safety checklist

  • Check the bed is assembled exactly as the instructions say, and re-tighten fixings regularly.
  • Keep guard rails on the top bunk at all times.
  • Do not place the bed next to a window, blind cords or ceiling lights.
  • Make sure children use the ladder, not the frame, to climb up.
  • Do not hang belts, cords or scarves from the bed.

Triple bunk bed or bunk bed with trundle?

If your ceiling is low, a standard bunk bed with a pull-out trundle can also sleep three while keeping the top bunk at normal height. The Bunk Bed with Trundle is an example. For four children, see the Quadruple Wooden Bunk Bed.
